Reports suggest Jack Straw decided two years ago it was in the UK's interests to make Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi eligible for return to Libya.
And it came during negotiations over an oil deal between the two nations.
Leaked letters from Mr Straw appear to show Megrahi was originally excluded from a prisoner transfer agreement - until the politician changed his mind.
He said it was in the UK's "overwhelming interests" to make the bomber eligible for return to his home country.
The Justice Secretary reportedly made the decision after discussions between Libya and BP over an oil exploration deal had hit difficulties.
This is far from the only media outlet carrying this story and there does seem to be mileage in it.
I wish to make my position on this plain. I am a tolerant man but this is too much, far to much! My sympathy lies exclusively with the victims of the Lockerbie bombing and their surviving relatives and friends.
If, and only if, Mr Jack Straw did do this terrible thing then I hope that it haunts him for his remaining days, may they be many and tormented and when his end does come may he die slowly and in great pain.
