Is it time to do away with the TV licence?

A fifty year old lady from Bedworth who is a carer for her husband has had £760 pounds wiped off a fine of over £1,000.  Initially I thought why?

The original fine was for non payment of a television licence.  The case was decided in December and since then she has defaulted on one payment which brought the case back to court.  This seems rather rapid to me and a waste of public money.  In the great scheme of things the law of the land seems to find a more pressing need to prosecute cases such as this rather than serious criminal cases.

In my opinion there should be a centrally funded government grant which could be topped up by the income from commercial services which the BBC has become quite good at in recent years.  If this approach were adopted then the licence fee system could be abolished which reduces expenditure equal to the amount spent collecting it.

The criminal justice system would also benefit.  I dread to think what size of bill the taxpayer incurs annually because of non payment of television licences.  How many cases come to court every year?  What is the cost of the people that go to prison for non payment of the television licence?
