Would Russia stop the home fires burning?

Gunboat diplomacy gave way to nuclear standoffs and a cold war.  These days the stakes are economic rather than military but with Russia's advantage in natural resources it does leave the question, "Would Russia, at considerable expense to its own economy, stop the home fires burning across much of mainland Europe for a while to make a point if they perceived an advantage in so doing?"  I think they just might.
