Spain needs to be careful.

Spain is getting itself into the news for all the wrong reasons. Dire economic woes, social upset and now we are told a threatened general strike.

This is clearly not a good time to be the Spanish leader.  The general strike, should it go ahead, is in protest at new labour laws that make it far easier and cheaper for companies to get rid of permanent contract workers and basically brings them into line with the situation in the UK.

Whereas I can understand Spaniards looking at our economy for ideas they need to open their eyes to the fact that socially and industrially our lax labour laws are a disaster for Britain.

We have long and bitter experience of the fact that if you make your workers cheaper to dismiss then they will automatically be the first target of the big companies should layoffs suit the bottom line.  Of all the aspects of our economy to choose to copy this is one that they should run away from, which I am sure that they would if they recognise it as the charging bull that it is.

For their sake I hope that they do.
