In the Queen’s speech Her Majesty read the following.
“My Government is committed to ensuring everyone has a fair chance in life. My Government will bring forward a Bill to promote equality, fight discrimination and introduce transparency in the workplace to help address the difference in pay between men and women.”
Very honourable words considering the calibre of people who wrote them for her.
From the Number10 website: -
Promoting equality is essential for individuals to fulfil their potential, for the creation of a cohesive society and for a strong economy. A substantial body of equality legislation has been introduced over the last four decades, protecting millions of people from discrimination and promoting greater equality. But the legislation has become complex and hard to understand. The Equality Bill will simplify and strengthen the law.
“The Equality Bill will simplify and strengthen the law”. Excellent! I am warming to this by the minute.
Putting equality at the heart of government is the aim according to the Government Equalities Office. This still sounds good to me. I really am warming to this piece of legislation which is being brought in to replace, not work alongside, the huge mound of legislation which ‘uman rights lawyers have been using for years to tie up resources and feather their own nests.
Well done the Labour government….. but hold on a moment. Before I break out the beers, what is this bit about?
Positive action on employing staff will be "entirely optional", but as long as candidates are equally suitable and there is evidence of under-representation, the Bill will allow employers to appoint someone from a group that is under-represented in their workforce.
Found that bit in The Independent newspaper but I will not pretend that I have not heard it before. One of the privileges of being an elected representative is that you get to clarify things with Council officers. Apparently it is not a legislative command that positive discrimination will be applied to two candidates who have the same qualifications, it is merely an option at this stage.
Hmmm, now I am not feeling so warm inside. I am beginning to feel the invasive tentacles of political correctness grasping the throat of decency.
At this stage positive discrimination is optional but I have some questions: -
- Why is it an option?
- Will it still be an option when the legislation finally emerges?
- How in the name of all that is holy can this be called an equality bill when it suggests discrimination between equals?
All over England people will be attending job interviews looking at the other applicants and calculating how many ‘positive discrimination points’ they may have as against their competing candidates.
This makes a mockery of the word equality.
Or to put it another way. In public service organisations and absolutely any branch of government organisation I believe the law would be applied as follows if, as I expect it to be sooner or later, the wording is amended to demand positive discrimination.
White men need not apply!
How about this as my suggestion for an Equality Bill.
Every featherless British biped is equal in the eyes of the law.
Shouldn’t need much more than that should it? Excludes the ostriches which are resident in the UK but hey, they are well looked after under other legislation. This stuff is just for humans.
