Mark has confirmed for me that he has indeed been contacted by the relevant authorities and told that he is clear of all charges. The allegations have been thrown out!
Now just to be clear on what this means.
Mark stood accused of making death threats against the Chairman as part of a leadership coup which included elements of lefties (for god’s sake) and of defrauding the party of an untold, though large number, of thousands of pounds from the party membership by means of rigging the printing costs.
Those are undoubtedly very serious charges. A tape was played (which I personally did not hear though I was offered the opportunity) to many activists and we were all assured that this was clear evidence and that evidence had been submitted to the police relating to all of the accusations. Prosecution was a foregone conclusion.
I may be naive. I have been called many things but for the life of me I cannot imagine the Crown Prosecution Service doing Mark Collett a favour. I personally believe that if Mark farts upwind of a failed assylum seeker he will be arrested and tried for cultural sensitivities if nothing else. If there was a ray of hope contained within the weight of ‘evidence’ provided to the police by the party then he would have been facing a prison sentence. Of this I have no doubt!
The real reasons for this persecution are beyond the scope of this piece. One day I may hear more about it in one of Mark’s speeches. I have been around a while and remember well the occasion when Mark made some unsound comments under the influence of alcohol to a tv producer which became a documentary so if someone tells me that Mark has made a mistake I will listen to what they have to say. We all have it within us to cock up occasionally. When anyone tries to tell me seriously that Mark has been colluding with people from outside the party to physically harm or kill anyone I listen in wonder, amazed that they think I might believe it. Mark would be disappointed if he found out afterwards that he had inadvertently given the time of day to one of those people. When the fraud allegations are added I needed to sit down. Pure fantasy!
Credit where it is due. For the intervening period between being dismissed and accused and being cleared Mark has maintained a dignified silence. Sounds easy doesn’t it? Imagine how you would react. This time must also have been unbearable for the Collett family as a whole. How would you react if your son faced these accusations?
I am really pleased that this particularly nasty chapter in the history of the BNP is reaching its conclusion. Reaching? I would be more than a little surprised if Mark continued to maintain his silence now that his name has officially been cleared. Knowing Mark he will probably upset a few people in the process. Never mind, it is character building.
